More leads sounds simple. Then you’re paying for enquiries that never pick up the phone, reading reports that don’t add up, and stuck in a contract that outlasts your patience.

The right lead generation agency can change how your business grows. The wrong one just changes how fast you spend. Here’s how to tell the difference before you sign anything.

In short

Before you choose a lead generation agency, decide what a qualified lead means for you and what you can afford to pay to win a customer. Then ask how they charge, how they measure lead quality, who owns your ad accounts and how long the contract runs.

What a lead generation agency actually does

In short: lead generation is the work of finding people who are interested in what you sell, getting them to raise their hand, and passing their details to you so you can turn them into customers.

A good lead generation agency doesn’t just get people to fill in a form. It finds the people who want what you sell, brings them to you, and helps make sure those enquiries actually become customers.

In practice, that usually means a mix of:

  • Paid search and paid social: ads that put you in front of people already looking, or likely to be interested.
  • SEO: building the organic visibility that brings enquiries in over the long term.
  • Landing pages: pages built to turn visitors into enquiries.
  • Tracking: knowing which ads, keywords and channels produce leads that turn into sales.
  • CRM and follow-up: making sure every enquiry gets a fast, joined-up response.

What it shouldn’t be is a bought list of contacts who never asked to hear from you. If an agency’s plan leans on cold data, keep asking questions. Want to see how we approach it? Here’s how our lead generation works.

Before you start, know what a good lead looks like

You can’t judge an agency’s results if you haven’t decided what success means. Before you speak to anyone, get clear on four things:

  • Your ideal customer: who they are, what they need and why they’d choose you.
  • What “qualified” means for you: the minimum someone needs to be worth a sales call, whether that’s budget, location, timing or something else.
  • What happens after someone enquires: who picks it up, how fast, and what the next step is.
  • Your numbers: a realistic monthly budget, and what you can afford to pay to win a customer.

That last one matters more than most people expect. A £20 lead that never buys is more expensive than a £150 lead that does. Once you know what a customer is worth, you can judge every agency on the same scale: what it costs to win one.

Questions to ask every lead generation agency

1. How do you charge?

Most agencies use one of three models, or a mix of them:

  • Pay per lead: you pay a set fee for each lead. Simple to budget, but it rewards volume, so check how a “lead” is defined.
  • Monthly retainer: a fixed fee for the work, with ad spend paid on top. Predictable, but make sure you know what the fee covers.
  • Percentage of ad spend: the agency takes a cut of what you spend on ads. The catch is that their fee grows when your spend does, whether or not results follow.

No model is right for everyone. What matters is that you know exactly what you’re paying for, what’s ad spend and what’s fee, and that there are no margins hidden in between.

2. How do you measure lead quality, not just volume?

Any agency can deliver volume. Ask how they track leads all the way through to completed deals, and whether they’ll report on cost per customer, not just cost per lead.

3. What happens after the lead comes in?

A lead nobody calls back is just a cost. Ask whether the agency helps with follow-up, CRM setup and the handover to your sales team, or whether its job ends at the form. See how we handle sales and CRM.

4. Who owns the ad accounts and data?

This is the question people forget to ask until they want to leave. Your ad accounts should be set up in your business’s name, with the agency given access to manage them. If the agency owns the account, you can lose years of campaign history, audiences and conversion data the day you part ways.

5. How long is the contract?

Minimum terms vary a lot. Some agencies work on rolling monthly contracts, while others ask for three, six or twelve months. Before you sign, check three things: the minimum term, the notice period, and whether the contract renews automatically. Those details are often in the terms rather than on the pricing page.

6. Can you show results for businesses like mine?

Ask for case studies with real numbers, ideally from your sector. Check they have the client’s permission to share them, and ask what the agency would do differently for you.

7. How often will I hear from you?

A monthly report is the minimum. The best agencies don’t wait for it: they flag problems and changes as they happen, and they’re easy to reach when you need them.

8. Do you test before you scale?

Good agencies start small, prove what works and scale when the numbers say it’s ready. Be wary of anyone who wants your full budget live in week one.

Red flags to watch out for

Walk away, or at least ask harder questions, if you see:

  • Guaranteed lead numbers before they understand your business.
  • Reports full of clicks and impressions, but nothing about sales or revenue.
  • Long lock-in contracts with no way out if performance doesn’t show up.
  • Vague answers about where leads come from.
  • Ad accounts in the agency’s name, not yours.
  • No proof, or case studies they can’t name or explain.
One red flag isn’t always a dealbreaker. Two or three usually are.

How leadly does it

We started leadly in 2019 to do lead generation differently, and fairer. Today, we look after the whole journey, from the first click to the completed deal.

That means we don’t stop at the form. Our Client Services team gets stuck into your business, our specialists test before they scale, and we judge our work on the customers it brings you, not the clicks.

FAQs

How much does a lead generation agency cost?

It depends on your sector, your goals and how competitive your market is. A lead in a crowded, high-value industry costs far more than one in a quieter market. Rather than comparing headline prices, ask each agency to split its quote into fee and ad spend, then compare what each would cost you per customer.

How long does it take to see results?

Paid channels can start bringing in enquiries fairly quickly once campaigns are live. Expect a testing period first, though, while the agency works out which audiences, ads and pages perform best. SEO takes longer and builds over months, not weeks.

Is lead generation better than SEO?

They do different jobs. Paid lead generation brings in enquiries quickly, while SEO builds visibility over time. Many businesses use both: paid for speed, SEO for the long term. Find out more about our SEO.

Can a lead generation agency work with my existing CRM?

In most cases, it should. Ask early which CRMs the agency has worked with and how leads will reach your system, because a lead that sits in an inbox goes cold fast.
